Growing Fur

Kids say the funniest things. The other day my four year old son Tucker proudly told me, “Mom, I’m starting to grow fur on my arms just like dad.” I laughed so hard I cried. He’s one funny boy. Isn’t it amazing how proud kids are when they see themselves becoming more like adults and less like babies? He’s excited about the little things: dressing himself, brushing his own hair and teeth, going potty “all by myself”. I’m proud too—and thankful. It’s made my life a little easier. As Christians we should always be looking a little more like Christ. His word conforms us into His image. The more we are in the Word the more we look like Christ. I’ve found this to be true in my own life. A few weeks ago I had been neglecting spending time in God’s Word, and unfortunately it resulted in me looking nothing like Christ when faced with an altercation with a family member. In fact, there was no family resemblance. Afterwards I was embarrassed and ashamed and apologetic. I know if I had been taking my daily Biblical dose of vitamin K—for Kindness— I would have acted completely different.

There have been other times in my life when I’ve been able to handle things with grace. The kind of grace under pressure that comes from dedicated daily time with our Lord in prayer and Bible study is not only nourishment for my own soul, but beneficial for those around me. Just like Tucker’s progression of hygiene makes it more convenient for me, our spiritual growth refreshes those around us. There’s no fear of hateful words, angry tempers, or unkind deeds when we are hydrated with the Living Water from the Word of God.

I’m challenged by God’s desire for us to be in His image. It would be a high honor for someone to recognize me as part of the family of God. I desire to be a mirrored image of Him, but it has to be more than desire. I’ve got to be diligent in knowing more of Him. Like Tucker, I want to look more like my Father—fur and all.

QUOTE: We do not segment our lives, giving some time to God, some to our business or schooling, while keeping parts to ourselves. The idea is to live all of our lives in the presence of God, under the authority of God, and for the honor and glory of God. That is what the Christian life is all about. —R. C. Sproul

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God,” Romans 12:2 KJV.
