Cross Your Heart

“Cross your heart?” my friends and I would ask each other after making a promise. Somehow saying cross my heart was enough to ensure the validity of the promise. If the promise was broken we would decry, “But you crossed your heart!”

Even if we don’t, God always takes promises seriously. Some promises are easier to keep, and some people are easier to keep them with. God made a promise to Abraham because He saw in him great faith—not someone perfect but someone with faith. He saw someone whom He could trust to keep His promise.

Abraham also made a promise to God. Because of Abraham’s faithfulness in keeping his promise to God, a nation was born. This nation would someday host the Son of God. Because of God’s faithfulness to keep His promise to Abraham, we are blessed to be a part of God’s covenant family. When we are faithful to keep our promises, God can do great things through us for generations to come.

PRAYER: I praise You God for the promises You kept. Thank You for Your faithfulness to the generations that preceded me and to those that will come after me. Help me live faithfully, keeping my promises so that others may see Your faithfulness.

“I will confirm my covenant as a perpetual covenant between me and you. It will extend to your descendants after you throughout their generations. I will be your God and the God of your descendants after you,” Genesis 17:7 NET.
