Something Mighty is Behind the Pain!

By Norma Vera –

Many years ago, my mother died and then my husband divorced me.  Those
days were filled with pain. I thought I would never heal. I felt like I
was swimming upstream or against a current it took so much out of me.

To keep from losing my mind, I played racquetball every morning and tennis
every evening. Switching grips from one sport to the other was not easy.
I was forced to invent a backhand grip that I could use with both games. I
curved my right arm all the way back until my tennis racquet was slightly
higher than the left side of my head.  It was similar to a racquetball
backhand. Next, I waited until the ball was at knee-level, then I would
sliced the ball and kill it right at the outside corners of the tennis
court beyond my opponents reach. I never intended to play for any other
reason than to forget my pain.  As a result, I developed a backhand curved
slice that helped me compete against players that were far better than I

These past two years have been emotionally hard also.  I have spent more
time in prayer than ever in my life. A couple of days ago I got another
bad report.  I cried a little, than something supernatural rose up inside
of me. Without thinking I said, “I am not afraid, God is on my side!” My
own words surprised me as a song bubbled-up inside of me and a shout of
joy overtook me.

I did not give myself to prayer to become a great prayer warrior. I prayed
because I was hurting so deeply. Never knowing that when the next evil
report came in, my spirit would automatically swim upstream. So when my
wounded spirit tried to cry, a KILLSHOT of a victory song arose inside of
me and JOY defeated sadness!!!

These are hard times people are under enormous stress. Many are losing
their children to war, while others are struggling to pay their

Most people I know are praying harder than ever, but others have lost
faith in prayer. I know a few who have shut down emotionally and would
rather sleep all day surrendering to despair. Sleeping profits us nothing.
It is not as if we are going to wake up and, “Walla” our problems solved

I heard a testimony of a man buried in the snow for a couple of days and
survived. When ask, “What was going through your mind? Did you think you
were going to die?”

He answered, “All I could think was, don’t panic or go to sleep, just keep
on digging until you reach the top. I knew that if I did either my life
would be over.”

“How did you know you were digging upward?” asked the reporter.

The man said, “I didn’t, I just trusted God’s grace.”

I have a picture on my bathroom mirror of a crane trying to swallow a
frog but the frog is choking the crane. At the bottom it reads, “NEVER

We must pray and never give up. Something mighty is developing behind our
pain if we faint not! God has a ‘BACKHAND SHOT’ that will defeat all the
forces of hell and darkness! Besides our children need to see God’s
goodness in our day of trouble. Then they will say, “My parent’s God, is
Truly God!”

Hi Norma, I finally got around to reading this article here at work. I wanted more detail on you “pain” so I would cry with you, which would make me “rejoice” more in your victory. Was it just supposed to be a very short article? I think you could write a book covering the details of these times in your life. I think you are headed in the right direction with your writing & showing real promise of greatness. Love & prayers, Sydney
