Does Heaven Smell Like Brownies?

Or perhaps it’s like jasmine, or the way an orange orchard smells when the trees are blooming.
My son once asked me, “If you bounce a ball in Heaven, will it fall out?” What a great question! He took it for granted that sports are eternal.
Another time, my daughter and I were talking about friends who had recently passed away. “Mommy,” she said, “Heaven is the best place in the world, right?”
Well, maybe not “in the world,” but she has the right idea.
Some people think Heaven will be boring. I’ve been asked, “Are we going to just sit around and worship all the time?” The question reveals more about a lack of enthusiastic worship on earth than it does about future activities in the hereafter.
The Bible gives a few glimpses of Heaven. Boring? No way! The elders and angels worship, but the scenes are more like the cheering of a happy host than a somber place to snooze. Think concert in a football stadium not meditation in a monastery. But the rock star on center stage is the Cornerstone of Life (Jesus). He’s worthy of all the applause!
Certainly, quiet reverence in worship is valuable, too. I’m sure we’ll experience God-centered peace like none imagined. But the One who created the earth is the One who is preparing Heaven. Bouncing balls, beautiful sunsets, athletic exertion, exotic colors, gentle mists on warm afternoons, the aroma of baking brownies—all were created by God. Why would Heaven have less?
Until we get to our Eternal Home, God gives us little glimpses of it here on earth. Every time we notice His temporary gifts, we glimpse a little of what the eternal gifts must be. The Bible says that wherever our treasures are, our hearts will also be. If Heaven is something we prize now, we carry a bit of it in our hearts every day.
So, maybe my daughter was right. Heaven is the best place on earth!
