I Quit!

My four-year-old son attends a half-day preschool program offered by our church. Recently after a two-week break from school I went in his room to wake him up and the first words out of his mouth were, “I quit!”
He had blissfully enjoyed his holiday. Sleeping in, staying up late, playing drums and blocks and wii – he had been carried away to a carnival of leisure. When the time came to get back into a routine he was more than reluctant. He was resistant. His attitude was terrible, there was a brief episode of kicking, then there were tears, and finally he surrendered.

How easy it is to forget the disciplined life. Just two weeks away from a four-month routine and my son was willing to throw in the proverbial towel. But before I judge him too harshly, I’m cautioned to look at my own life. So many times when I’ve strayed from my spiritual routine I’ve acted the same way as he did. I whine, fight off the Holy Spirit’s prodding, tear up and then finally I surrender.

It’s tough being involved in a committed routine. My son is now back in the swing of things and happily goes to class because he understands how much fun his teacher is. He enjoys all the good things that come from being involved in something on a regular basis – friends, parties, playground privileges and snack time. How much more the lesson is for this mother. Staying committed to my walk with Christ has many perks. I get the fellowship of other believers, the benefits of peace, love and joy and the added delicacy of walking daily with my Savior. Those moments of leisure, when I think I am having fun have nothing compared to staying the course with Christ.

PRAYER: Thank You Lord for Your constancy in my life. No matter how ready I am to through in the towel, You are there to remind me of the sweet fellowship I have when I stay close to You. Strengthen me with Your power to walk in a more committed way.

“Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand,” Psalm 37:24 KJV.
