I loved helping my mom plant flowers when I was little.  I loved all the different colors and smells of each flower, and how they were all different and unique in their own way.  My mom would always tell me to be careful when putting the flowers into the pots.  I had to make sure the roots stayed intact to each other.  I didn’t understand what was so important about the roots.  She then began to explain to me that the roots are the most important part of the flower.  No one can see the roots, right?  So why are they so important?  “The roots keep the flower strong.  It brings the flower the nutrients that it needs to stay alive”, she explained.

Much like a flower, we have to be rooted in something.  Colossians 2:6-7 says, “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted, and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”  We were created to be rooted in Christ and to live a life that pleases God.  God gives us all the nutrients we need to live a life that pleases Him.  Our roots start to grow the more we spend time in His Word.

A few weeks after planting the flowers with my mom, we would have to replant them in other pots.  The roots were starting to suffocate because the pot was not big enough for it to continue to grow.  As we grow in the Lord we face trials that make us feel suffocated at times.  Though we may feel suffocated, it is a sign that we are growing.  The Lord tests us with the intent of growing us.  Even though we feel so much pressure at our roots at times, the Lord is simply repotting us.  Next time you become overwhelmed with trials, remember He is right there beside you.  He is making your roots in Him so much stronger and growing you.

God is the ultimate gardener.
