The Gas Men

Two gas company servicemen, a senior training supervisor and a young trainee, were out checking meters in a suburban neighborhood. They parked their truck at the end of the alley and worked their way to the other end. At the last house a woman looking out her kitchen window watched the two men as they checked her gas meter.

Finishing the meter check, the senior supervisor challenged his younger co-worker to a foot race down the alley back to the truck to prove that an older guy could outrun a younger one.

As they came running up to the truck, they realized the lady from that last house was huffing and puffing right behind them. They stopped and asked her what was wrong.

Gasping for breath, she replied, "When I see two gas men running as hard as you two were, I figured I'd better run too!"

Honestly, I think she had the right idea. When I first heard that story, it brought a verse from scripture to my mind about something totally different. Proverb 28:1 says, “The wicked man flees though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.” One application of this is that when there is known sin in your life, you spend a great deal of your time and energy feeling like someone knows and has “found” you out. On the flip side, if you are not hiding anything, then even false accusations do not bother you because you know the truth.

I have seen this lived out in my life a number of times. There have been times when I was knowingly hiding something that I didn’t want anyone to know about. I tried so hard to keep it secret. I tried so hard to “put up a front.” Yet, it felt like everyone knew! It felt like, at any moment, someone was going to say, “I gotcha! I know your deep dark secret!” My heart was always tight and twisted as I looked over my shoulder waiting to be exposed. When really, no one knew.

Also there have been times in my life when I was accused of doing something wrong when I knew that I hadn’t. After my initial shock and anger concerning the accusation, I experienced great peace because I knew truth was on my side.

When I was trying to hide my wickedness, I felt like I was being chased. When I was innocent, I didn’t care who chased, I knew I was okay. What’s going on in your heart today? Are you running when no one is chasing because you are trying to hide something or are you standing firm because you know that you are clean? God is waiting to relieve you of your burden today. Cry out to Jesus for peace and forgiveness!

Verse To  Meditate On:
“To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." John 8:31-32
