What is the Deal with Holiness?

Everyone’s been talking about how amazing this year is going to be.  People have started new things being that 8 represents new beginnings. Some have put their plans into motion, and others are still planning for this exciting season ahead of us.

The amazing thing is that in my excitement for the great things I believe God has in store for me and my ministry, He’s been tugging at my heart with a scripture.

In Ephesians 1:3-4, the Paul writes, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, in Christ; for He chose us in Him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in His sight."

God chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless. God wants us to be holy, so what’s the deal with holiness?

Normally people have this really distorted perception of what holiness is. They think it’s this boring, too good for everyone else vibe, where you have to dress and talk funny and be extremely religious.

But this scripture keeps repeating in my head: "Be holy as the LORD is holy" (Lev. 20:26; 1 Pet. 1:16).

God is Holy, that’s all He can be, that’s who He is. Just like God is love, He is Holy. So, holiness is not something you do, but it’s something you are.

Holiness is being like God. When Jesus walked this Earth, He was holy. Everything He did was holy even when He got angry and made that whip (Jn. 2:15). The point I’m trying to make is that we need to change our perception of what holiness is. Have you ever wondered why we have a sense of humour? The only reason we have a sense of humour is because God has a sense of humour. Remember before Adam and Eve took that plunge into sin, God created them in His image. Guess what… They were holy and they didn’t even have to try.

When Adam and Eve sinned, our holiness was lost, but God wants to restore us back to the way He created us. That’s why He paid such a price — not just so we could have a ticket to heaven. Along with inheriting heaven, we have the privilege of having a relationship with the Almighty God, the creator of the universe. Look at John 17:3. (Jesus is speaking.) "This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and the One You have sent – Jesus Christ."

Only because of the blood of Jesus can we be righteous. We can’t do anything in our own strength; otherwise, Jesus wouldn’t have had to come and be crucified. So His righteousness gives us access to Him, and that opens the door for us to be holy. As we allow the Holy Spirit to teach and lead us we will become who God created us to be. We will become holy. But it is up to us to decide if we want to be who God created us to be.

God wants to restore us to Him because He created us for Him. Even before the foundation of the earth, God created us to be Holy and blameless. That means if we're not living in holiness we are unfulfilled, unsatisfied and incomplete. God wants to rebuild our generation because He wants to use us to reveal His glory on this earth.

The question is this: do you want to be holy as HE is holy?
