Taste and See

A verse I’ve known since I was a little girl came to my attention again this morning, and I began to reflect on it once more: “Taste and see that the Lord is good! How blessed is the one that takes shelter in Him,” (Psalm 34:8, NET). It is obvious that we sense God’s goodness in the times of plenty, during days of happiness, or as we see ways He blesses our lives. But, do we see His goodness during the difficulties?

Did I believe in His goodness when I had cancer at the age of five? Is God good when my wonderful father suffered years of senility before dying? Do we see His goodness if a child is born with a disability or when a spouse walks out on a family? How about when it’s hard to pay bills or we lose our jobs? Do I believe when hardship becomes overwhelming? Do I taste and see His goodness then?

No matter what comes into our lives, I believe God’s goodness surrounds us. He tells us to “taste” it – to test it, to take a step of faith and see the Lord prove He is good. The rest of the verse tells us how we can see and taste of God’s goodness and mercy. We take shelter in Him. He is the one who protects and carries us through those storms in life. Just as Jesus was with His disciples in the boat during the storm, He is with us too.

When I tend to doubt the goodness of God in my life, by faith I claim His promises. All through Scripture are verses that give hope, help and encouragement as we go through life’s struggles.  When my faith becomes weak, I stand on His Word. God is there to shelter and give peace through the storms. He is my Protector, and I will taste and see His goodness. Be blessed, because it’s a promise!

PRAYER: Lord, You are good. You are my shelter in the storms of life. When my faith becomes weak, help me to stand on promises in Scripture and trust in Your goodness.

“As for the Rock, His work is perfect, for all His ways are just. He is a reliable God who is never unjust, He is fair and upright” (Deuteronomy 31:27 NET).
