What Health Insurance Crisis?

My father-in-law no longer worries about health care issues, the state of the economy, or global warming. He doesn’t fret about bulging landfills or neighborhood crime. Even the cost of prescription drugs has lost its ability to rattle him. He doesn’t worry about anything.
He died three weeks ago.

My husband’s father left his worries with the shell of his body when he was welcomed into heaven and into the arms of the God he trusted with his life and his eternity.

As it does with most of us, facing the death of a loved one sobered us to the realities of the things that are worth worrying about. It’s a short list.

In ill health for many years, he rarely had what we might call a good day. At his memorial service, his pastor said, “Whenever I saw him and would ask, ‘How are you doing?’ he always answered, ‘Oh, I hurt.’”

We family members sitting in the front row knew that to be true. We heard those words often.

The pastor took a breath and continued. “The next time I ask him how he’s doing, he’s going to say, ‘Glorious!’”

The Bible tells us that the suffering of this present world is not worthy to be compared to the glory to come.

All the concerns that might have occupied my father-in-law’s attention are gone, blinded by the Light of the Presence of God. In an instant, health care, the economy, and the cost of Lipitor became moot points for him. All he thinks about anymore is Jesus.

PRAYER: Lord, I want to start now, losing my cares and concerns in the blinding Light. Help me keep the “frettables” of this life in perspective in light of the nearness of eternity.

“The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us,” Romans 8:18 KJV.
