A Birthday Prayer—On Facing Old Age

Dear Lord,

Let this day be the positive beginning of the final chapter of my life—an open door to the oft-dreaded, much-feared thing called old age. Let me not only be a positive example to others of growing old gracefully, but a delight to you, as I grow older with joy…. relying on your grace…. seeking your face.

As I think about aging in light of “The Serenity Prayer,” which has made such an impact on my life, these words pour from my spirit: Help me to let go of things that don’t matter in the long run, focus on things that do, and rejoice in your ever-present wisdom that shows me which is which.

Help me to make good choices: When I’m angry, help me to love mercy; when afraid, help me to cling to your promises; when tempted, rely on your strength; when hurting, find comfort as I rest between your shoulders. Help me to make the most of what you have given me, appreciate my blessings and grieve my losses while remembering that blessings and losses are only momentary in light of eternity with you in heaven.

Lord, as I walk into this new decade, help me to leave behind Ineptness, my old nemesis. Guard the doors of my heart so he won’t sneak in blasting forth with lies that paralyze me as I try to step out in faith. Guard me, too, from Complacency, who also paralyzes, but in a more subtle yet even more toxic way.

Help me to continue to strive in your strength to be and do and accomplish, but now, Lord, help me to do it without stressing because I know that, in you, I will become the person you created me to be; I can do all you assigned me to do and accomplish the purpose you determined for me before time began.

Let me test and prove your perfect will, Lord, as I follow your directions and obey your leading. Inspire me. Give me visions of what is to come and how past things have paved the way for them.

Show me your ways, oh God. Help me to walk in your Truth. Give me an undying faith in You as, holding your hand, I confidently approach old age.
